Kenya

From Safari Plains to Swahili Shores

Kenya is a land of sweeping savannas, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. From the vast plains of the Maasai Mara to the towering peaks of Mount Kenya, it offers incredible opportunities for adventure and exploration. Visitors can witness the Great Migration, spot the Big Five on a safari, or experience the traditions of the Maasai people. Beyond the wilderness, Nairobi’s bustling markets and the white-sand beaches of the Swahili coast add even more depth to the journey.
It pairs well with Tanzania, Uganda, or Rwanda, creating a well-rounded East African adventure. Many travelers combine a Kenyan safari with Tanzania’s Serengeti for an extended wildlife experience or venture into Uganda and Rwanda for gorilla trekking in the misty mountain forests.

Why

Kenya is most known for spotting wildlife, which is abundant and offers an enriching and truly awe-inspiring experience. But this is far from the only reason one should go to Kenya. There are 76 different tribes, including the Maasai people, who are famous for their bright red shukas and colorful beads. Visiting one or many of these tribes can allow you to get to know very real cultures that are still living in their traditional ways (though I do recommend skipping the fake villages in the conservancies and opting for authentic homestays instead). Many climate zones can give you a completely new perspective– besides the grasslands, there are wide white-sand beaches on the coast, the desert and scrub and in the north, plus the highlands and many tea plantations of central Kenya. All with their own story to tell.

Where

One of the major countries in East Africa with a surprisingly gorgeous coastline facing the Indian Ocean. It’s located just north of Tanzania, South of Ethiopia, to the west you find Uganda, and Kenya shares a border with Somalia to the northeast. The equator runs straight through the middle of the country, keeping the temperatures mostly consistent year-round.

How

Kenya offers one of Africa’s most well-connected countries in terms of flight patterns, so you can fly nearly everywhere if you plan to jump around. However, the roads are decently maintained, and hiring a driver is your best option. The train system is still up and coming but highly recommended if heading to or from the coast from Nairobi as it is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, offering wildlife spotting while it crosses multiple wildlife reserves.
